Yan Mikirtumov was born in Moscow (Russia) in 1974. He started studying music at the age of 5 at the Moscow State Choir College of A. Sveshnikov. In 1997 he obtaining a Master degree as a Choir conductor, Singer and Professor at the Academy of Choral Art in Moscow with a thesis on "Genre of Passion Oratorios in the work of Heinrich Schütz", where he studied with the well-known choir conductor Viktor Popov (conducting) and the famous pianist and conductor Mikhail Arkadiev (piano). Between1997/1998 he studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory with leading Russian composers such as Roman Ledenev, Georgy Dmitriyev, Vladislav Agafonnikov. In 2013 he complete his Doctor of Music and Musicology degree at the University of Évora with thesis “Piano reduction: Three specificities” under the supervision of Dr. Pedro Amaral, where he made a new piano reductions of Concerto da Camera col Violoncello Obbligato by F. Lopes-Graça, Pli selon pli by Pierre Boulez and opera Lady Sarashina by Péter Eötvös, that was published by Ricordi (Germany) in 2014.
Since 1989 he started his career as a solo singer, choir conductor and pianist. He has participated in concert tours and recording in Europe and North America, worked with baroque music ensembles and drama - theatres in Russia.
Since 1999 he works and lives in Portugal where he works as a music teacher, pianist-accompanist and composer. He has founded his own children choir in the city Albufeira and his quartet "Con´tradição" which performs his own music. His choir represented Portugal on Festivals of Youth Choirs in France, Germany, Greece, Austria and Spain.
He collaborates with various musical entities in Portugal such as: Lisbon Opera Theatre, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, Gulbenkian Foundation, Portuguese National Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Cascais and Oeiras, Classical Orchestra of the South, Porto Symphony Orchestra at Casa da Musica, Madeira Classical Orchestra, Eborae Music, Estoril Interpretation Competition among others. His arrangements and compositions were commissioned by orchestras, chamber music groups and soloists in Portugal, Spain, Romania, Finland and Russia. He participated in several projects in Cape Verde and Angola, among which exclusive arrangements and orchestrations for Tito Paris & Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra Project. Some of his works were edited by publishers "Copy-us" (Germany), AvA Musical Edition (Portugal) and Ricordi (Germany).
He has recorded and participates in recordings of more than 50 CD´s as a conductor, composer, pianist-accompanist and producer including recordings label Melodya, Dargil, Universal, Russian State Radio & Television, NDR (Germany) and Antena2 (Portugal). He was a President and member of jury at Vocal Art Choir Competition (VACC) since 2010. Currently, he is a professor at National Academy of Advanced Orchestral Studies, Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa and Director of Studies at AMEC|Metropolitana.
